- are overly descriptive
- are stream-of-consciousness
- have a slow, languid pace
- have odd, clunky formats (all over the page — not in normal paragraphs)
- have terrible grammar or spelling (or lack of punctuation, even)
- contain a lot of coarse language — especially if the F-word is used a lot, or if God’s name is taken in vain
- are purely essays or short-stories
- are full of poetry (though, there are some exceptions)
- contain excessive violence
- have too much “brand-name” dropping ~ if I can’t picture the item/product, I can’t relate, and you’ve lost me (example: “One Little Secret” by Allison Bottke ~ it was filled with Designer names that I didn’t recognize)
- contain too much mathematical/scientific/philosophical data… those all go right over my head and make my brain hurt!
- push an agenda
- involve war or politics
